Who licenses pilots in Australia

Training in Australia is licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), under CASA Part 61.

The licences, in order

  1. 1.RPL — Recreational Pilot Licence
  2. 2.PPL — Private Pilot Licence
  3. 3.CPL — Commercial Pilot Licence
  4. 4.ATPL — Air Transport Pilot Licence

The medical

A CASA Class 2 medical for private flying, or a Class 1 for commercial — from a CASA-designated aviation medical examiner (DAME). You will also need an Aviation Reference Number before you start.

Rules change. Treat this as the shape of the system, not as advice — CASA is the only source that binds.
