Who licenses pilots in the United States
Training in the United States is licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), under 14 CFR Part 61 or Part 141 — the same certificates either way, but a Part 141 school teaches an FAA-approved syllabus.
The licences, in order
- 1.Student Pilot Certificate
- 2.Sport or Recreational Pilot Certificate
- 3.Private Pilot Certificate (PPL)
- 4.Commercial Pilot Certificate (CPL)
- 5.Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP)
The medical
An FAA medical certificate from an Aviation Medical Examiner — third class to fly privately, first class for airline flying.
Rules change. Treat this as the shape of the system, not as advice — the FAA is the only source that binds.
