Who licenses pilots in South Africa

Training in South Africa is licensed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), under the South African Civil Aviation Regulations.

The licences, in order

  1. 1.RPL — Recreational Pilot Licence
  2. 2.PPL — Private Pilot Licence
  3. 3.CPL — Commercial Pilot Licence
  4. 4.ATPL — Airline Transport Pilot Licence

The medical

A Class 2 medical for private flying, or a Class 1 for commercial — from a SACAA-designated examiner.

Rules change. Treat this as the shape of the system, not as advice — the SACAA is the only source that binds.
